Nigerian Army Speaks On Alleged Shooting In Abia

Published

on

The Nigeria Army has spoken on a reported recent shooting incident between Nigerian troops and some gunmen at Ebe, Ohafia in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria’s South-east.

Some gunmen and the troops from 14 Brigade were said to have engaged in a shootout in the area on Friday evening.

The shootings reportedly caused panic among residents of the area, forcing them to flee the community.

Other sources claimed that the troops were searching houses and firing sporadic shots in the community, which caused panic among the people.

But the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Innocent Omale, debunked the report.

Mr Omale, a lieutenant, told Vanguard newspaper on Saturday, that the troops were not searching houses as speculated.

The spokesperson said some soldiers were on patrol when some hoodlums saw them and engaged them in a shootout.

“Our people were going out on patrol and on their way back, these bad boys saw them and started shooting at them,” he said.

Reacting to the report that the troops were firing sporadic shots, Mr Omale said, “Are our men mad that they will just start shooting like that?”

He, however, said the situation had been brought under control and that no life was lost in the incident.

The Nigerian military and officials of other security agencies have been fighting gunmen, believed to be part of the Biafra agitation in South-east Nigeria.

Amnesty International Nigeria and other organisations have accused the military of extrajudicial killings in the region under the guise of fighting the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, which is leading the agitation for an independent state of Biafra.

Abia Police Decry Attack On Officers

The Abia State Police Command has alleged that an attack on their men by some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra resulted in the death of five members of the terrorist group.

The claim is contained in a statement by the Command’s PRO, Geoffrey Ogbonna, on behalf of Police Commissioner Mustapha Bala.

The News Agency of Nigeria gathered that five members of the group were shot dead in Osusu Aba on Friday as they were on a procession across Aba.

Some of the residents said the group was protesting peacefully without disturbance.

An eyewitness, Chinomso Aka, said the group was protesting continued detention of the group leader, Nnamdi Kanu, on Friday when the incident happened.

Meanwhile, Bala said, “On March 31, 2023 around 11:45am, policemen in show of force within Aba metropolis came under attack by proscribed IPOB/ESN members.

“They were armed with petrol bombs, machetes, battle axes and other dangerous weapons.

“The attack was repelled by the police operatives with minimal casualties while majority of the hoodlums scampered for safety.

“However, normalcy has returned in the area.”

The Command, therefore, warned any person or group intending to scuttle the relative peace enjoyed in the state to rethink such an idea.

Members of the All Progressives Congress in Ozzi Edem, Nsukka Local Government Area, have collapsed their structure, vowing to redirect their energy into ensuring the victory of Frank Nweke Jr as the next Governor of Enugu State.

Addressing the community at Afor Ozzi market, the former ward chairman of now defunct All Progressives Congress in Ozzi Edem ward, Hon. Mathew Enete said that their decision was based on the premises that APGA is their own party. They vowed to prove this at the polls on March 11.

The declaration was followed by the burning of brooms and other party artefacts.

In his address, Nweke thanked the Edem people for the warm welcome they accorded him and for aligning with APGA’s core philosophy of shared prosperity – being one’s brothers and sister’s keeper where nobody is left behind.

Nweke assured the people of his commitment to rehabilitate the major road that led to the Edem community, which has remained in terrible condition for decades.

He vowed to ensure that all outstanding pensions are paid and further guarantee the timely and regular payment of pensions and gratuities to retirees.

Nweke therefore urged the people to vote massively for him and other APGA candidates for the State House of Assembly on March 11, so that with his emergence as Governor, he will fulfil his promises to the good people of Enugu State.

He concluded by welcoming the former members of the All Progressives Congress to the All Progressives Grand Alliance, stating that he was confident that God would grant their request for good leadership.
