Herbalist Remanded For Murder In Lagos

A High Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Wednesday, remanded a 37-year-old herbalist, Bamidele Mayowa, over the alleged murder and dismemberment of a mother of two, Mercy Ekienabor, 35.

 

Three others accomplices including a woman, Oluwakemi Azeez, 21, Oyedegun Adewale, 28, and Jejelaye Olusola, 23, were remanded to a correctional centre in the state.

 

They were remanded after being arraigned before Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay on three counts bordering on murder, misconduct with regard to corpse and accessory after the facts of the murder, preferred against them by the Lagos State Government.

 

During the arraignment of the defendants, the state prosecuting counsel, Titilayo Olanrewaju-Daud, told the court that they committed the offence on December 16, 2021.

 

She said the incident took place around 12pm at No 17, Ijedodo Road, in the Ijegun area of the state, adding that Mayowa allegedly killed Ekienabore by giving her a noxious substance and dismembering her corpse.

 

The prosecutor also said around 3pm on the same day and at the same address, the first defendant dismembered the deceased’s corpse.

According to Olanrewaju-Daud, the second to fourth defendants on December 18, 2021, allegedly buried the butchered remains of the late Ekienabor in a hole at the premises where she was killed,

She said the offences committed contravened Sections 222, 165, and 231 and were punishable under Sections 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

 

However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge against them and were remanded in prison custody.

 

Mr I.O. Bashua announced his appearance for the first defendant, while Mr F.I. Dennis appeared for the second to fourth defendants.

 

Justice Nicol-Clay adjourned the case till June 27 and 28, 2023, for the commencement of trial.

Man Arrested For Stabbing Wife To Death In Delta

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a butcher for allegedly stabbing his wife to death in Warri metropolis.

 

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday evening when the suspect tried to scoop hot water to bathe on returning from the market.

 

PUNCH Metro gathered that his wife refused and asked him not to touch the hot water on the cooker claiming he did not provide money for house upkeep nor to refill cooking gas cylinder.

 

But the suspect reportedly ignored his wife’s refusal and forced his way to the burning gas cooker to scoop the hot water.

 

Consequently, the aggrieved wife reportedly attacked him during which a fight broke out between the couple.

 

In the ensuing scuffle, the wife was said to have rushed for a kitchen knife with the intention to stab her husband.

However, the man reportedly overpowered the wife and forcefully collected the knife from her, and used the same to stab the woman several times until she collapsed.

It was gathered that at that point, the suspect, seeing the gravity of his action, carried the wounded woman to a private hospital for treatment.

 

His daughter, pained by the development, was said to have rushed to a nearby police station where she reported the incident and the suspect was immediately arrested.

 

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident.

 

The PPRO said, “Confirmed” without providing much details.

Police Probe Alleged Abduction Of Rivers APC Lawyer

The Rivers State Police Command on Friday said it is probing the alleged abduction a lawyer working for the All Progressives Congress in the state of Dr Godswill Dike.

On Thursday, the Rivers chapter alleged the abduction of its lawyer inside the Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this in a statement in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

 

Iringe-Koko said though no formal complaint has been made, the Commissioner of Police Okon Effiong, has ordered operatives of the Command to investigate claims by the APC that their lawyer was abducted after signing for and taking possession of the Certified True Copies of election documents.

The CP has promised that anyone found culpable would be made to face the wrath of the law.

Man Tortured To Death In Bauchi For Stealing Watermelons

Four people have been arrested for allegedly torturing a suspected watermelon thief to death in Bauchi, the Police has said.

 

Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Command, Ahmed Wakil, disclosed this in a media statement made available to journalists in the State.

 

He said that the deceased was caught after allegedly stealing seven watermelons valued at N2,000 from a summer farm in Dallaji Village, Tudin Wada Ward in Warji Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

 

Wakil, a Superintendent of Police said: “On the 29th March 2023 at about 10.00am, one Ado Sanya, male (40) of Dallaji village Tudun Wada Ward, Warji LGA, reported at Warji Divisional Police Headquarters that on the same date at about 1.20am, one Ibrahim Hashimu, male, criminally trespass into the farmland of one Mohammed Garba, male, of the same address and stole some watermelons.

 

“His hands were tied with a rope and beaten with sticks by Mohammad Daluta, (24); Ibrahim Mahmud (22); Bashir Mahmud (18); Abdullahi Mahmud (22); all males of the same address.

 

“On receiving the report, a team of detectives was quickly drafted to the scene and evacuated the victim to General Hospital Warji for medical attention where they referred to the Cottage Hospital, Gwaram LGA, Jigawa State, where he was certified dead by the medical doctor.

 

“An investigation commenced in earnest and preliminary investigation revealed that the victim “Ibrahim Hashimu” trespassed into a summer farm and stole seven pieces of watermelon fruit valued at N2,000.

“In the process of taking away the stolen items, the owner of the farm caught him on the spot. He then conspired with others and beat him with sticks. As a result, he sustained an internal injury which led to his death.

“Consequently, all the above four suspects were successfully arrested and an investigation is still ongoing to explore all the intricacies surrounding the case.”

 

 

 

According to him, the Commissioner of Police, Aminu Alhassan, while reacting to the incident, frowned at the action of the suspects, who, instead of reporting the case to the Police for proper investigation and prosecution, took the law into their hands.

 

“He however directed that the case be transferred to criminal investigation department Bauchi, for discreet investigation and assured members of the public that justice will be served accordingly,” he assured.

 

Similarly, the PPRO said that on March 24, 2023 at about 10.09pm, some unknown persons, trespassed into the house of one Abdu Muhammadu, male (30) of Dasare village, Tarbuwa Ward in Zaki Local Government Area of Bauchi State and shot him with a bow and arrow on his chest.

 

He said that as a result, he sustained serious injuries; adding that having received intelligence of the incident on March 26, 2023 around 12.30am, Police Operatives attached to Zaki Divisional headquarters led by the Divisional Police Officer, rushed to the scene and evacuated the victim to Federal Medical Centre, Azare for immediate medical treatment, where he was certified dead by the medical doctor.

Wakil said that during the investigation, the Command arrested one Sambo Adamu, male (22) of the same address, in connection with the case, and he voluntarily confessed his culpability.

 

The Police Spokesman said that efforts have been intensified to explore more facts in the incident in order to arrest the remaining suspects adding however, that investigation is ongoing.
