The Police have confirmed the death of eight persons, seven of which are of the same family, who died on Sunday in a road accident in Enugu, along the hilly parts of Ugwu Onyeama.
The accident occurred at Ugwuonyeama on the Enugu-Onitsha road on Sunday morning.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Enugu State, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the accident occurred at 8 a.m.
Amaraizu said the accident involved a Toyota car with registration number CM960FKJ and Toyota Hiace bus with registration number ENU75YY, belonging to a mass transit company.
“The two vehicles collided,’’ he said.
The PPRO said seven passengers in the Toyota car, members of the same family, died in the incident.
He added that their bodies had been deposited in the mortuary of the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital – ESUT, at Parklane.
He said four others sustained injuries in the accident and were receiving medical attention at the same hospital, adding that investigation into the incident had commenced.
The Onitsha-Enugu express way construction has been abandoned by the Federal Government with the Minister for Works, Babatunde Fashola, stating incompetence on the part of the contractor for the road abandonment. The road has been in a terrible state with vehicles using a single lane for what is supposed to be a dual lane carriage.
Adding to the distress is the closing off of the old Onitsha road linking Ngwo to Enugu metropolis. This old narrow roadway which has been recently rehabilitated by the State Government –being a Federal Road albeit– has been the road of succor for travellers who has been avoiding the terrible condition of Ugwu Oyeama, with the blockade of the road at the Milliken section, travellers and commuters are now forced back to the horrible Onitsha-Enugu express way.
