Pandemonium ripped through Abakpa Nike in Umuchigbo community in Enugu as Vigilante security allegedly killed an indigene in the late hours of today, Friday June 13.
Troubled began when Mr. Ikechukwu Ubosi approached the vigilante checkpoint very close to his gate and was flagged down by the vigilante men with torchlights and asked to wind down his windows. The victim was said to have complied and told them he was in a hurry and drove to his house just few metres to the security post when one of the vigilante fired at him, hitting his leg.
According to recidents and witnesses who craved anonymity, trouble began when the victim drove his Nissan SUV towards the gate and was asked to wind down his widow. An argument ensued even after Mr Ikechukwu Ubosi complied and did as he was orderd by the local security.
However on alighting from his vehicle, he eas allegedly shot in the leg with a locally made firearm and was rushed to a hospital where he bled to death.
Most recidents have complained of the high-handedness of the local vigilante who they claim is always extorting the recidents and taking laws into their hands. Some residents told our correspondent that the security levy was only increased recently form two hundred Naira to 50 hundred Naira per individual.
As at the time of filing this report, armed youths within the locality are resisting the combined efforts of both men and officers of Trans Ekulu and Nike police Station who are attempting to tow the victim’s vehicle away.
There’s report of sporadic shootings form both the police and locally armed youths who have embarked on a violent protests in Umuchigbo, Abakpa Nike.
