Akpabio who by current standing in the Senate should be the Senate Majority Leader by virtue of PDP’s number advantage in the Senate is ready to defect to the All Progressives Congress, APC any time soon, if sources within the Presidency is to be believed.
Special Assistant on Prosecution to President Buhari, Okoi Obono-Obla revealed on his Facebook profile that Mr Akpabio will be recieved into APC on Thursday by Yemi Osinbajo, who has become the Acting President in the Absence of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Mr. Obono-Obla’s Facebook posts also bears a photo of Senator Akpabio with the APC National leader, Nils Tinubu.
Information has been making the rounds since last week that Mr Akpabio, who is a former governor of Akwa Ibom, was perfecting his plan to leave the PDP.
There were speculations that the defection was delayed because Mr Akpabio was negotiating for some “favourable terms” for himself and his political supporters in the state.
It is claimed that the senator was asking for the position of the senate president and also that he should be made the APC leader in the state and the party political structure handed over to him.
PREMIUM TIMES, however, has not been able to independently verify these claims.
Mr Obono-Obla, in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES, said: “Senator Akpabio is defecting to the APC, you can take that to the bank”.
Akpabio” defection follows an ongoing feud with the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel over party structure in the State.
The peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had tried to broker a peace deal without trying to hurt the structure of the sitting Governor who is the political leader of the State.
Akpabio had accused Governor Udom Emmanuel of abandoning his uncompleted projects and marginalisation of a section of Akwa Ibom State.
